Insect Queen

I figure that I would talk about one of my costuming projects. The Insect Queen was inspired by the FR-YWU competition, but It won’t be ready in time. The theme this year is insects. My Insect Queen is queen of ALL insects.

She has an 1860s cage crinoline under a skirt of tulle under an overlapping layers of dragonfly wings topped with a layer of fabric beetle wings.

Over my natural form corset, she is wearing a boned horizontally striped black and white bodice with an extended point in back forming a stinger. The bodice back lacing will be covered with armor into the stinger. The armor will also cover the shoulders and run along the top of the arms with black and white striped sleeves peeking out. The high neck of the bodice will support a large Elizabethan collar of dragonfly wings covered with a multitude of embroidered beetles and butterflies. The supportase will have ants marching on the framework with an occasional ladybug. The vanes will arch inward between the ruff wings and end with a LED firefly.

Her train is a set of large butterfly wings over a set of large dragonfly wings. The dragonfly wings run from mid-back into a train that’s twice the length of the skirt.

Her coronation mantle is the green of beetle wings covered with a starburst pattern of actual beetle wings centers over small dragonfly wings. The edging of the mantle are pairs of fabric beetle wings with small dragonfly wings. The capelet of her mantle is a pair of fabric beetle wings.

Her regalia consists of a crown, scepter, and orb.

The crown has two lines of ladybugs. There is a row of scarabs between the ladybugs. At intervals, a stag beetle reaches from the bottom line of ladybugs to above the second line to support a dragonfly in full display in it’s pincers.

The scepter has a no-low relief of a spiral of ant and fire ants, against a white background, marching up the wand. Four stag beetles circle the wand touching the sphere with preying mantis ends on their mid torso section. The preying mantis are touching the sphere with both arms and feet. The big sphere is iridescent with faceting, looks like a bug eye. The other end of the scepter is likewise circled with four grasshoppers touching a small sphere. The small sphere is like the large one.

The glowing orb is surrounded by four dragonflies in flight in a circle facing inward and their bodies arched with wings flared out and back, heads and tails inward. The orb is supported by a pair of scarabs on a short handle facing each other (touching) with wings and cases spread wide together.

I guess I better head up to the LA Fabric District this weekend. They’re clearing out their silk taffetas and won’t carry them anymore. :)

I'm thinking of starting a mostly costuming and craft blog. Any name suggestions?

I actually finished an outfit for Costume College. I seem to be at an one outfit limit currently, which I need to fix.

Whew. The popcorn ceiling in the craft room is NOT asbestos. Proceeding with craft room renovations.

Eek, I have to set up sewing work area elsewhere and get the active project supplies moved out but still accessible.

Then move stuff out for changing side and picture windows for smaller windows and replacing the wood paneling there and insulation. Then it's replacing the flooring in two stages.

THUD.

Oh lovely, I have caught a cold for my vacation. Good thing I'm not traveling this time.

Wish me luck. I have a nasty history of having my bronchial tubes go hyperactive whenever I have a cold.

Just signed up for Costume Con 36. My first Costume Con, anyone else going?

I got my limited attendance class letter for Costume College: Intro to Thermoplastics, A Pressing Matter, Don't Be Yourself: How to Pose with Character, and Shopping Safari into the LA Fabric District. I might be running into Fabric District on both Thursday and Monday.
